Jonny Cake A Rising Bahamian Performing Artist

Written by Paula Brennen
Who is Jonny Cake, the “Featured Artist” at the upcoming Tri-State Kick-Off Mixer on May 3rd at Slattery’s Midtown Pub, New Yorkers are asking themselves exactly, “Who is Johnny Cake?” In response, I ask, “Who is the artist this year that received three Elevation Awards, namely, Best New Artist, Song of The Year, and Best Traditional Song. The selection of Jonny Cake by this Bahamian body, which acknowledges achievements in entertainment, was not a fluke.
Rio Johnson aka Jonny Cake, a native Bahamian was influenced by his musically talented parents and gained an appreciation for contemporary and traditional genres. As a teenager he became skilled on the trombone, bass guitar and piano.
While in college he merged the rap style in his compositions with the rake and scrape vibe of his native Bahamas (performed with an actual saw and metal rod). This unique blend and his energetic delivery caught a lot of attention. He’s appeared on Eye Witness News, a pre-game Super Bowl event, and been interviewed by international radio hosts.
As a creative artist, he composes commercials and jingles. In 2024, Jonny Cake, now in his mid-thirties, released an album of original compositions and has a YouTube site as well.
He has become a household name among his 20-45 year old fan base and entertains with his fresh lyrics. If you don’t get the import of the lyrics, his energetic dance moves will captivate you. Look forward to enjoying a memorable show!
