Nashville is turning up the island vibes this summer as Junkanoo in Music City takes over with a full week of cultural celebration, music, and community unity!

Day 1 of the summer camp kicked off Monday, July 14th, with a special treat — legendary Bahamian artist Tanya Hanna began teaching students traditional Goombay songs straight from the heart of the Bahamas. Her warm energy and soulful voice had the kids singing along in no time, setting the tone for a week filled with rhythm, culture, and connection.

This unique summer camp experience runs from July 14th to July 19th, and it all leads up to the main event on Saturday, July 19th, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM — a full-day celebration of Junkanoo, the Bahamas’ most vibrant and iconic cultural tradition.

What makes this event so special?
It’s all been organized by Troika Hanna, son of Bahamian legends Paul and Tanya Hanna, as a way to highlight and share the richness of Bahamian culture with the people of Nashville. From music to movement, and from island rhythms to youth empowerment, the camp and event are all about unity and pride.

Junkanoo in Music City will feature:

– Live performances by Bahamian entertainers

– Cultural showcases by students participating in the weeklong camp

– Hands-on experiences with music, dance, and art

– A day of family-friendly fun, food, and celebration

This incredible initiative is proudly sponsored by Rock The City and MaximumBass, two organizations deeply committed to culture, community, and creative expression. They’re bringing the Caribbean spirit to Tennessee — and you’re invited to be part of it!

Follow along here at Rock The City as we post daily pictures and updates capturing the energy and joy of the camp. From workshops to rehearsals, you’ll get a front-row look at how these young voices are connecting to something bigger through Bahamian culture.
